Focus Types and Subject-Object Asymmetry in Korean Case Ellipsis: A New Look at Focus Effects
نویسندگان
چکیده
Acceptability of case ellipsis on focused subjects and objects exhibits clear asymmetry which so far has not received a plausible explanation. Case ellipsis on focused direct objects occurs naturally, whereas case ellipsis on focused transitive subjects is unnatural whether the subject is contrastively focused or not. The main purpose of this paper is to provide experimental evidence that the degree of acceptability of case ellipsis on focused argument NPs in Korean is sensitive to the usage probability of their properties. Our experiment shows that the degree of acceptability of case ellipsis on focused argument NPs in Korean and the strength of the influence of focus types on case ellipsis both correlate with the likelihood for the argument’s referent to be new information. We argue that this finding lends support to the view that language users’ intuitions of acceptability in context are probability-sensitive in that their preferences are affected by the usage probability of properties of argument NPs.

Acquisition of English Relative Clauses by Adult Persian Learners: Focus on Resumptive Pronouns
Tsimpli and Dimitrakopoulou (2007) observed that uninterpretable features are unavailable in second language (L2) acquisition after the critical period. In this paper, we verify this claim by providing evidence from Persian speaking learners of English as an L2 on the status of resumptive pronouns (RPs) as uniterpretable features. Unlike English which does not allow RPs, Persian shows various b...
متن کاملNot Voice but Case Identity in VP Ellipsis of English
This paper develops a Case/case-theoretic acco unt for what Merchant (2008) calls voice mism atch in ellipsis constructions of English. Merch ant (ibid.) reports that VP ellipsis as an elision o f smaller size VP allows voice mismatch, but Ps eudogapping and Sluicing as an elision of bigge r size vP/TP do not. However, Tanaka (2011) ar gues against Merchant's dichotomy in voice mis match betwee...
متن کاملObject and Action Naming: A Study on Persian-Speaking Children
Objectives: Nouns and verbs are the central conceptual linguistic units of language acquisition in all human languages. While the noun-bias hypothesis claims that nouns have a privilege in children’s lexical development across languages, studies on Mandarin and Korean and other languages have challenged this view. More recent cross-linguistic naming studies on children in German, Turkish,...
متن کاملA-Scrambling Exists!
The nature of scrambling is a focus of recent debate in the syntactic literature. The term scrambling is used to describe apparently optional permutations of word order, found especially in languages with extensive case-marking. Saito (1989) argues that scrambling is A-bar movement (like wh-movement), rather than A-movement (like movement to the subject position). Webelhuth (1989) argues for sc...
متن کاملEllipsis of Case-Markers and Information Structure in Japanese
This paper presents an HPSG formalisation of how the ellipsis of casemarking affects the focus of the clause in Japanese. We restrict our attention to the nominative and accusative markers ga and o, and in view of the fact that the ellipsis effects on focushood vary between 1) ga and o and 2) different argument structures of the head verb, develop an essentially lexicalist account that combines...
